    two things:

1st depending on how much hard drive space you have you can dual boot it will make things less fustrating when certain things you have to work on in linux. i would suggest that you install linux along windows until you are comfortable.

2nd the choice of a distro is like ice cream there are many flavors and just as many favorites to just about everyone. check out distro watch www.distrowatch.com for a good idea on how to find one that will work for you. you can also try acouple of live distros to find the one that will work with your laptop. i have found that laptops have integrated hardware that may or may not work with your linux choice.

I'd advise you to use a live cd first since you want to try linux.

i actually wouldnt, dual booting something like suse or fedora would be a good idea, they would sort out the bootloader for you, and you wouldnt even have to see the cli unless you want to

I must agree with this. While I can't comment on fedora/mandriva very much I must say I'm very happy with the way opensuse works on my laptop (inc. ATI drivers working fine)

I can comment on fedora it's awsome for people who are usedto linux but not linux gods yet. I have seen CLI many a time on fedora so it's not for hardcore newbies
