Systemtrash : would you put your grandmother on linux ?
Hi,
Frank and me (Dimi) are the hosts of the podcast (and vidcast) Systemtrash (www.systemtrash.com) . Every month we take an operating system to the test and try to provide as much information about an OS as we possibly can in less than an hour.
We already covered Ubuntu 5.10, SUSE 10.0, PCLinuxOS 0.92 and Gentoo 2006.0 (aired this sunday). We will be reviewing Fedora Core 5 for the next one and Mepis 6.0 after that.
While we get a lot more feedback than we expected on the OS'ses we covered we need feedback and suggestions on distros we haven't covered yet !
It would be great if some of you (newbies, experienced linux users, raw-code-eating veterans) could just reply on this thread.
Any comment would be great ! It's from this kind of feedback Frank and I can prepare the show with real user information.
Thanks in advance.
Dimi.

i'd set up gentoo then let her have fun. i'm thinking of getting a PC for my auntie and cousin and linuxing it up for them before they can experience windows
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

No, I would not. She doesn't own a computer and it took her 20 years to get comfortable with cable TV.

my grandmother only got an answering machine within the last 10 years and is baffled by call notes. it was all i could do to get her to use the computer i built with windows for her. that computer by the way she doesnt use still to this day. i am using slackware its simplisity helps in its stability. havent had much luck with any other distro.

the question is not only what you would give to your grannie
but also what you are using yourselves and why

If my Grandmother was interesting in getting a computer, I would set her up with a stable and solid Linux box. My Grandmother doesn't need to worry or deal with spyware, AV updates, and the like. She would just need email, some sort of office app (something basic like Abiword) and a good web browser. Personally, I'd set her up with Vector Linux, running Firefox and Freerock Gnome. Oh I know it just sounds so thrilling haha. Simple, stable, and user friendly. And quick. The point is, Once I show Grandma the ropes, I don't want a call every ten minutes wanting help.

TechieMoe,
you are right, the previous question about which distro one uses has already been treated, so I changed the question (what distro should your grandma use) to the poll's question.
thanks.
Dimi.

No, my grandmother (deceased now) spent nearly 10 years trying to understand Windows and never could even grasp an understanding of basic email concepts, so she was better off when she had no computer at all. It turned out to be only a source of extreme frustration for her.
Now, that's not to say that no grandmother is ready for computers, and/or linux.
