    SuSE 10.1 is awesome!

I just upgraded my laptop to the rc1 version, and it's faster, and more useable than 10.0.

first off, when you install a single rpm, instead of going through the klunky yast interface, it will now install through the zen-installer, which so far has been faster for me. my only problem with it so far is if you have the YaST module open while trying to install something with zen, the zen will fail due to reasons i forget at the moment.

also, alot of rpms that needed tweaking to run properly in suse 10.0 now work automatically in 10.1. an example would be the mplayer-plugin for firefox now installs to the proper firefox directory, so you don't have to go dig it up.

the best thing though is wireless card installation has been simplified alot in 10.1 with a new module called knetworkmanager that works closely with YaST. i set up my wireless my simply going through ndiswrapper -i file.inf->ndiswrapper -m->Set up the YaST network interface->modprobe ndiswrapper, and it worked. this is much better than the 2nd time i set it up in 10.0 that took 3 hours .

this is only the first improvements i've noticed and experienced so far on my 1 hour old 10.1 install. its looking to be a very very good distro.

No, I believe the decision was to raise Gnome to equal status, not superior. Unlike previous releases, the user is asked at install which desktop they'd like to run. AFAIK you can still have both, but now you have an explicit question during install.

Man, I am hoping that 10.1 is MUCH better than 10.0.

I would actually like to see this release of suse work. However, I have never tried any version of suse other than 10.0.

Considering it's popularity, I really would like to see a working version installed on my computer.

That's great about your suse 10.1 install, Jiraiya-sama. You have had success with 10.1 (or a beta of it). Did 10.0 work for you well? And what are the specs of your laptop?

    I'm just interested.

i see. i always got the impression that their(ie novell's) initial plan was to get rid of kde on their desktop completely. but due to an uproar by some kde fans, kde has now been reinstated as a token gesture. however, gnome will be the default on all future suse desktops and will be the main focus of their development. it even states this in linux format(ie issue LXF 79) during a review of SLED. so its different on SLED than it is on openSuse then? it would seem a bit pointless for novell to go about things this way. they would just be making a lot more unecessary work for themselves.

10 worked reasonably well for me with some quirks. here are my specs:

    amd64 3200
    512mb ram
    70gb HD
    broadcom 4306 wireless chip
    nforce3 chipset
    geforce4 440 Go 64M

hope thats enough. i'm running an HP pavillion zv5k. i would suggest you try 10.1 weedman, they add alot of hardware support each version.

I really dont know why does everybody say that 10.0 is so horrible. For me that was the best distro that i tried for 2 years. And looking at such sweet comments about 10.1 I think I will totally blow me away

That's a nice system you've got! I would have loved to have one just like that. Oh well, I dream on.

carlosponti said that the full 10.1 will come out on the 25th. I will see if I can get my hands on it then.

unfortunately 10 never worked anywhere i installed it. i installed it on my wifes laptop and when the login screen was supposed to come up nothing happened just a bright light green color phading in. when i installed it on my desktop the screen resolution was off where it was fuzzy and non-readable, i think it had something to do with my monitor.

    my current specs
    sempron 3600+
Kt600 motherboard (asus i think) (integrated sound, integrated network card)
    GeForce 6600GT
512 mb ran and a 200 gb hard drive.
    Radius 21 inch crt monitor.
