Poor, poor completely wrong blogger...
(I suggest reading the entire blog entry to understand it more)OK, well, Linux weenies are still up to their old tricks of half-truths and misinformation. And they are also redefining the rules. Take this long-winded and obscenely flawed recent Linux propaganda. I won't go into the whole bloody thing because it has more holes than Charlie Brown's ghost costume. I'll just focus on two things. The first one is the reoccurring claim that "Linux does not want to be Windows." Riiiiiiiight. Tell this to the GNOME folks. Tell this to the KDE folks. Tell this to the Ubuntu folks. Tell this to Novell. Tell this to Red Hat. Yes, Linux was originally created by geeks for geeks, but there is now a HUGE segment of the Linux community that wants Linux to compete with Windows at every level. You can't simply ignore this LARGE percentage of Linux users. It also does not help your case when you Linux losers speak out one side of your mouth that "Linux does not want to compete with Windows" and out the other side of your mouth bash Windows and Microsoft with abandon. If Linux is not Windows and does not compete with Windows then why do you care so much about Windows and Microsoft to bash them?
The rest of the article is chock full of some of the worst reasoning and logic I have ever witnessed in writing. It also contains flawed examples like this CLASSIC about "ease of use." Basically, what the article says is that in an "arbitrary" example of trying to cut five lines of text and paste it at the end of a document that "vi" (a Linux line editor) and Word/Notepad/Wordpad compare thus:
The Windows way:
- Ctrl-Shift-Down
- Ctrl-Shift-Down
- Ctrl-Shift-Down
- Ctrl-Shift-Down
- Ctrl-X
- Ctrl-End
- Ctrl-V
In vi:
- d5d
- Shift-g
- p
The point that is trying to be made is that vi is "easier to use" because there are less steps involved. Word is simply "easier to figure out if you don't already know." So, basically, redefine "easy to use." Unfortunately, the author's logic is, well, it's really bad. Not to mention that fact that he DOESN'T EVEN GET THE PROCESS RIGHT!!!
In vi (really):
- ESC
- d5d
- Shift-g
- p
If you don't hit the ESC key, you could just end up typing "d5d G p" into your document.
Also, if just about ANY other command sequence had been chosen "arbitrarily", vi would require the prefix entry of "/" or ":" or some other key and the entry of the ENTER key to actually execute the command. Furthermore, let's take actually entering some text, "this is some text".
In Word:
- this is some text
In vi:
- i
- this is some text
- ESC
So, THREE TIMES the number of steps in vi.
Wait..... what about the origional DOS command "EDIT.EXE" (released in 1980)????
I tried using that before....holy CRAP its hard to use...
The guy was comparing software written in 1976 to software written in 2000+!!!!
How much more biased can you get?
If we compared EDIT.EXE to oowriter or gedit or kedit , gedit, kedit, and oowriter would come out on top undoubtedly!
I just came accross this and wanted to spread it around.

We all know that these people are out there.
These people exist on both sides of the fence.
What I don't understand is why there needs to be a fence?
I use both Linux and Windows.
For certain things I find Windows to be easier, for others I find Linux to be easier.
And Linux is just so much more fun to tweak than Windows is.How to know if you are a geek.
when you respond to "get a life!" with "what's the URL?"

I love Linux... I can't get enough of it... I work with Linux to write my dissertation, listen to music, surf the Web, etc. Quite honestly I will stop beeatching about Windows and reading complaints about Linux... Is bad for my zen-like state...

most hardened geeks have to use windows at some point. i write code for a living. at home i use linux at work i use windows. i have no choice in that. the only windows i use at home is for video editing, gaming, and pptp vpn into work. other than that i have pretty much figured out how to do everything else on linux. there is always more that i need to do but i will cross that bridge when i come to it. I dont see any sense in knocking either. i have my reasons for choosing linux(im cheap) and my reasons are fulfilled. i say that the blogger needs to not bash linux as much and get a real life. or atleast that is what he would say to a windows bashing linux user.
edit: upon reading the blog further i think he is chastising linux windows bashers as being as shortsided as billy for the doing the same for so many years now. the whole of the blog states be the bigger person.

true but...
Totally agree. You need a bit of windows and linux for a healthy computer diet, but you have to admit there are thousands of linux zealots who would write a similar blog entry just swapping windows and linux around.
As far as I see it Linux and Windows are just better suited to different audiences. Linux is great for the home user who has enough time on their hands to have fun with it, and windows for the business type user who just wants to do work and pay an IT technician to maintain the box for him.
Neither is wrong, just different. Linux happens to suit my needs well, windows suits some people better, and windows/linux zealots are everywhere. I just try to ignore them.

There will always be those with closed minds. The best thing to do in all cases is ignore them. Posting a thread about them simply gives them unneccessary attention. Let's all move on.
