Core 5 "a Bit" Unstable? Quirky?

Well, my Core 4 installation was rock-solid, even though Fedora is supposed to be a "cutting-edge" distribution. I never had a problem with it.

With Core 5 I encounter strange problems every now and then. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, the sound card refuses to start up, and KDE notifies me at start-up that since there is no sound device, the output will be redirected to the null device.

The GNOME included with this version seems to be quite unstable. For instance, sometimes when I minimise xine, all the open windows change position; they move down by about 20 pixels. (This problem does not exist in KDE.)

There are a few other quirks. I wonder how many others have faced these problems with Fedora Core 5.

You're not alone in finding FC5 unstable. I've had issues with most FC releases in the past, of varying severity. FC4 was probably one of the least buggy I've tried, but I just seem to have very bad luck with Fedora in general.

IMHO FC5 is way more buggy than FC4. I only had one minor problem with FC4 (some printer stuff), it was rock stable. Now with FC5, I encountered many problems that have never been there before on the same hardware. I rolled my fedora-laptop back to FC4 again.

I guess I am the minority. I had more problems with 4 than 5.

I've had no notable problems using either. Some minor quirks with FC5 more so than FC4, but nothing that I can't live with.

I am put off with Fedora Core 5, I've had more problems with it in the 36 hours I've been using it than I had within the entire 7 months of FC4!! The funny thing? None of it is problems with new stuff. All the OLD stuff that was installed in FC4 is now broken, which is irritating because most of it is entertainment-based.
I can't play Quake 4 anymore, Neverwinter runs for 5 minutes before locking up the entire system or simply crashing, DVDs are hit or miss, Cedega is all f'ed up, Mupen64 no longer runs, basically the only entertainment working anymore is XMMS. Thank god... I'd go nuts without my music.

Sure, the critical stuff works, OpenOffice, Thunderbird, Firefox, etc... but my MAC is my workhorse. My Linux box is for entertainment and procrastination... now all it's doing is keeping me from studying for finals week.

If anyone knows anything about how Fedora Core partitions disks, can you take a look at my thread in the FC/RH forum? The faster I can get rid of this mess without losing all my data, the better.
Cause the whole world loves it when you don\'t get down.
And the whole world loves it when you make that sound.

I have had problems with FC5, but all were caused by my server (which was running FC2). I had IMAP problems at first, but I'd been planning a server upgrade for a year now, and finally got round to it. The only other FC5 problems were with authentication while I was setting up my Fedora Directory Server on my CentOS server, and they were all caused by mis-configuration of the server.

All-in-all, I've found FC5 more stable and much nicer than FC4 (or, for that matter FC2).

I personallly think FC3 and 4 were the best, though tonnes of people had problems with 3 i was reletivly uneffected!
FC5 seems ok-ish, I had a few problems... Just small errors on boot up and stuff.
    Released too quickly it seems
