Hmmm ... I have mixed feelings. On the one hand I think smoking is very dangerous. On the other I know that many smokers desperately want to give up, but nicotine is highly addictive and giving up is incredibly hard.
Some of the most interesting people I've met have been smokers (my best friend smokes for example) but I have a theory that smoking is the sign of deep rooted emotional problems and inner conflict ... Having said that the friend I just mentioned: well, I really love her and she's not my friend for nothing.
I don't like breathing in 'second hand' smoke, and try to avoid it as much as I can. The trouble is, most of the non-smoking pubs I know are boring. It's a complex issue.I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso

I don't see it as complex. I hate smoking, and all smoking should be banned. I also hate alcohol and country music, and think the world would be a better place without either. Perhaps I'm just very extreme in my preferences.

- 05-11-2006 #5I was recently in an elevator with my friend ... the one who smokes. Neither of us farted. That's real friendship!!

It's sorta straightforward - cutting a fart or having a drink while I'm in the room, while potentially unpleasant for me, doesn't really hurt me. Smoking does. Well, so does country music for that matter.
The only reason this isn't a black and white issue is that it's a government-sanctioned highly additive and dangerous drug, and lots of people are addicted. Like most people here I'm sure, I know lots of people that are addicted that I like - I know it's tough. However, the least they can do is not give me cancer - ta very much!
What slays me are the hardcore pro-smoking lobby - who thinks it's their *right* to smoke in public. Makes me want to fart in their face.

The smoking ban here in Ireland is great. I mean there were a lot of moaners, but to be honest I find that people who smoke are the people who do the most moaning anyway. Hey that's just opinion people.
Although alcohol on the other hand, yeah it's a poison. Much like many medicines and foods we it. And I really can't abide alcoholics but I do think just one drink can be beneficial if for no reason other than it's mild sedative effect. Maybe that's why you're always so angry Moe

I'll buy that for a dollar. I've been saying that for years. I think it's much better to deal with your own problems than to rely on a habit be it nailbiting, smoking whatever.

Country music is far less of a scar on our society than alcahol and smoking. I will say that there are other styles of music that have had a much worse effect on our culture. I'll give you this that you do reserve the right to an opinion and for that right I'll argue mine.
- 05-11-2006 #10That's my biggest complaint. What people do in private is their business, but smoking is something that is harmful to people around you, and I consider it just plain rude to do it in public.
