One that does not ...
- 05-17-2006 #31There's simply no way this can be done with the current way X Windows and the Linux kernel work. In order to load the 3D drivers, you must make some reference to the kernel (ie a module). In order for X Windows to load the driver, you MUST edit your config file.

Again, this idea has been tossed around for a while and the issue that gets in the way most often is the fact that there is no "standard" way to install Linux. Linux is a kernel, and everything else you add to it is after the fact. There is no way for 3rd party software to know that XXX package will always be present on the end-user's system or that YYY package hasn't been altered in some way that won't let the installer work.Something to make it simple for an EU to download a repacked file, or a 3rd party installer that would do the install for them with the minimum of input.
There have been efforts in the direction of standardization (Debian Core Consortium, Linux Standards Base), but until they're readily adopted by the majority of the distributions out there, this will continue to be a problem with no forseeable solution.Registered Linux user #270181

now that you are accusing everyone who is giving you valid points of flaming you i think i am done with you. go off create your own distro for all we care. you are COMPLETELY missing the point. there are already distros out there that do what you propose. why bother making abother DUMBED down OS that is what windows is for. Create another distro be happy get glory but in the end it will be just number 151 in the truely staggering amount of distros that get no attention. we are trying to make you understand that this is about being practical. If there were 200 automakers in the US making another auto manufacturer would just be uncalled for. no one here is saying it cant be done. for somethings it cant but that is not my point. how many more distros do we really need that want to make windows users jump ship. there are atleast 4 or 5 now in existance. I dont believe everyone should be on linux anyhow. i think that even if its only for a technical croud then so be it. the mac for the longest time was only for the artistic and printing world. linux should only be a competing OS not a replacement OS for windows. i see nothing wrong with windows in itself. In short i am not your daddy, no others here are either and are not required to have encouragement. sometimes if someone has advice for you it is ultimately up to you if you should follow it. we are giving you the advice give up and contribute to a distro that has your aims because your ideas are just going to get lost in the shuffle if you create a new distro. if you are so damn determined to create yet another distro be our guest just dont bug us with it. i am so tired of snot nosed know it alls saying they can do what no others have. another sad thing is that at some point Video will be a problem for you because DRM is now becoming so prevelent that windows is the only one who will have it legally. that in itself is going to stop you at some point unless you can pay the big bucks to get lawyers involved to bring DRM to linux in a fair and open way. so now that i have said my peace go off create design but just dont bug me with it.

This thread is starting to get out of hand. If the original poster feels the need to create another Linux distribution, I think we all wish him/her the best of luck. There have been some good points for and against the idea and I hope the poster takes all of these into consideration. End of discussion.
