Migration - Windows XP to SUSE 10.1 - some success!!
Hi!
In the spirit of Linux, I thought it best to share a success story today regarding migration from Windows the Suse.
System - DELL Inspiron 1300 with dual Suse / Windows boot
Problem - what to do with years of Outlook Express emails
Solution
Boot to Windows
Download Mozilla Thunderbird in Windows - import Outlook Express data on start up
Re-Boot to Suse
Using File Manager or My Computer, locate the following:
/windows/C/Documents and Settings/(your user name)/Application Data/Thunderbird/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default
Copy this directory (right click, copy).
Navigate to your Home directory in Linux, right click to paste the directory there
Now locate the following:
/root/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default
Take note of the 8-digit xxxxxxxx tag.
Navigate to where you stored the copy of the Windows data, and right-click to rename the folder using the above Linux tag.
Right-click to copy this re-named folder.
Return to the above /root/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default location and right click to paste.
Click on Overwrite All.
Re-start Thunderbird.
Good luck! It worked for me!

NOTE - The above process will completely replace any existing data you have in Thunderbird (Linux) so best to empty the mail folders or start with an empty installation.

That's cool that it worked for you, and it's cool that you dared to try. A lot of people fear stuff like this. On your success story - high five!

Glad you got it working. There is an easier way. Instead of replacing the profile and renaming. Just copy everything insed of xxxxxxxx.default and place them in your Linux xxxxxxxx.default profile. I do this often when testing distros. I copy my profile to a partition that will not be overwritten and once I install a new distro, I just copy the contents of the profile over.
- 05-28-2006 #4root? root??? good sir, i recommend you log off that account and now! you should NEVER log in as root under any circumstances. if you need root privelages, use su.

Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

Welcome to the forums, AJK!

Yep, not good to be using the root account for normal user activities.
Hey, glad you are having fun with it. Welcome to the world of Linux.
