You can start a thread for your printer, and post the exact model of it as well as any other relevant information.

debian users are the most nerdy and most hardcore, as such they spend alot more time on forums online and usually know their stuff.

"Most hard core?" I thought the BSD was the most hard core!

if by hardcore you mean their forums and channels are always having a flamewar, then... yeah.

Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

my opinion

Well, after installing a few distros, Ubuntu seems to behave the best so far. The installation/upgrade/package upgrade process is long but I don't mind. DSL is very quick but can get a bit confusing. I found *BSD worked on one installation, but didn't the next (on the same system) which is very odd. MandrivaOne stalled on the graphical boot-up screen. PCLinux stalled on the system screen before installation. MINIX 3 just stalled, period. Fedora Core 5 laughed at my system and said you suck and so does your computer. PuppyLinux is ok but seems designed for bubble-gum chewers.
I plan on trying Dragonfly 1.4.4 (LiveCD), Insert-1.3.6, Vector Linux 4.0 (SOHO release), Damn Small Linux Not 0.1RC1, Debian 3.1 R2.
I like experimenting and finding out how badly I can crash something.

Size of Repositories

yea, gentoo dudes can usually throw down pretty hard, too.

one more thing about debian: people always praise apt's huge install base, like 400x (?? estimate with huge error margins) more packages than yum/rpm. however, i think theres alot of garbage in the apt repositories and you have to compare quality of packages in addition to quantity. Even so, apt is probalby a little more impressive. Anyone disagree with this viewpoint?

My one experience with Debian involved trying to install Woody (which is still the one distro name that makes me giggle like a schoolgirl), and completely failing after spending 2 days selecting packages and still not having an X Server. Needless to say, I wasn't happy.

I've never tried any of the more recent ones, so I really can't talk about the installs anymore. However, I can say that I despise their philosophy of "If we don't consider it 100% OSS, we're just not gonna make it official". I mean, I support FOSS in 99% of cases, but it is MY decision if I will or not, and if I want nVidia drivers and win32codecs, then I'll get them. Yes, I realize that there are repos for that stuff, but it still bugs me that Debian doesn't include them in the official repos.

And a huge install base? Ha! Try Gentoo: all source, all the time. Even if we don't have an Ebuild for it, we still got it .

Hi Cabhan, Yes their install is some what trying, I also think that it's out dated. The support from the forums are helpful but sparse. If you check out the dates there isn't many current, Iv'e tried two times to reinstall and get it right only to find more glitches, I think I'll try Gentoo soon and let you know if I like it.
Thanks once more to all that gave their input. fvs
