actually I rementioned gnash because of what cousinlucky said.

Sadly, this is the result when there is only proprietary software.

My train of thought still leads me to believe that if Linux users are so adept that they can create new distributions of Linux they ought to be able to produce better software just for Linux than what is commercially available just for Windows. I notice that young Linux users complain that not enough Linux games are available but they have the knowhow to build their own computers. How hard is it to design computer games?

well, a game that youngsters want, is hard to do and is not a one-man job.
consider the 3d modeling and texture mapping, model animations (these take lots of time. it took me 3 weeks to make a good Tokarev tt33 pistol mod for call of duty), compiling the models into binary, writing the game scripts, writing the graphics engine (or modifying an existing one, which also takes time). not to mention recording sounds, video, making intros etc...

that was a bit off-topic, but i do also see your point. if the linux comunity can make good operating systems the other software shoould also be possible.

but in the case of a flash replacement, wouldnt that require decompiling the flash dlls and seeing how they work? i have tried doing it but it was a bit complicated for me

I am very glad that you see my point. I have family and friends that have mac's and my exposure to them and the problems they had convinced me to not go down that road. Using mac's is a better option than windows but it has its flaws. I came into Linux blindly. I did not know anything about its history or development. I was through with windows so if I wanted to use the Internet Linux was/is the only thing available. Once I became a member of this community it dawned on me that Linux is not just an operating system it is a whole different way of life. ( It is the way, in my humble opinion, that humanity should be conducting itself. )
What Linux needs is someone rich gathering and paying Linux engineers to work together and take Linux to its ultimate potential; which I am sure is way beyond my imagination or comprehension.
