Downloaded the supposedly STABLE (3.1r2) network installation CD (debian-31r2-i386-netinst.iso), and here's what the readme file says:

* You should keep in mind that this is an unofficial CD of the current development version of the Debian system. This means that all sorts of bugs may be present anywhere in the system.

The filename itself says r2 - release candidate 2. Are you sure you got the stable release? With regards to Release Candidates - When they go gold they are not rebuilt again, but merely renamed to Gold Master. Rebuilding would intorduce potential problems.

An observation, methinks.

Either you did snag a RC, or it could be a distro mistake, where that comment wasn't excised as it typically would be. In the end, of course, not a single OS of any flavour can claim to be bug-free.

I'm not sure what I got. I go to http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/, where it says: Official CD images of the "stable" releases (their quotes, not mine). Then it advises use of the mirror in Sweden, which I did.

I didn't see anything named Gold Master.

Except FreeBSD, which never ever has any bugs . The accuracy of such claims is open to question, however
