Ubuntu Dapper Ship-it
Just received my Ubuntu/Kubuntu Dapper free ship-it CDs. Already a talking spot here at work, looking forward to trying it out at home. I doubt I'll be converted but it certainly will be interesting. I like a lot of what Ubuntu has done for the community in terms of promotional work and pushing the ease of use factor. Nice.
Plus they were cool enough to include some free stickers this time which is cool. May finally replace my Red Hat stickers from 7.0

I took the plunge last week, installing 6.06 as a virtual machine - using VMware Server. Aside from a little learning curve, Ubuntu is definitely a keeper. Coming from a strict SuSE and occasional CentOS user, the deployment of Ubuntu required a few additional steps.
If you are going to use Ubuntu as a server, be sure to remember to manually add the FQDN to the hosts file or you will have issues with Apache2 and other network daemons. Trust me, I had to learn the hard way but with a little help here at the forums I learned the setup issues rather quickly. Other than that, Ubuntu Server is awesome! Ubuntu Workstation is also quite polished; however, I'm sticking with SuSE 10.1 as my workstation and will occassionally deploy Ubuntu Server as needed at work.

My CDs still having coming in! The last Ubuntu version I tried was 5.04, which was a big disapointment. I decided to stay away from it during the 5.10 release... I'm hoping this new release will actually work out of the box for every one of my computers (all 5 of them). If that happens, I'm giving them to my friends (I ordered 5 CDs).

I have just installed it now. Easy as hell, one of the more basic installs. I think Ubuntu might be on to something with the tight package selection. I know Slack and others do it too, it's just newish to me coming from Suse and Mandriva. Even my atheros wifi card was detected automagically and my 1920x1200 screen is set up correctly. I'm going to update sources.list and sort out media playback and WPA because my house is already set up for that.
I have already given away about 8 discs. People are far more open to the idae of linux these days. I think the packaging adds a bit more credibility in some people's eyes. Some people freak out at the idea of a techie coming in with a freshly downloaded and burned disc with no label telling them "Oh this is waaay better"
I'll let you guys know how I get on, but I'm impressed I have to say. Don't think I'll switch, I really like my Suse but I may run it on my laptop if everything goes well.Last edited by bigtomrodney; 06-28-2006 at 06:38 PM.

I'm going to keep an open mind, but considering it still requires an internet connection for anything useful, I'm guessing this one won't be much more positive than the last reviews. Who knows?

One thing I thought was cool though I'm sure that it's not news to users - when it rebooted I had put my CD back in the drive. It recognised it as being an Ubuntu disk and asked me if I wanted to add it to my repository list. Pretty neat. Anyway, I'm going back to being cynical. No distro deserves favour!
Except Slax of course.
- 06-28-2006 #8Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember plain old Debian Sarge doing this the last time I installed it, and the Sarge DVD had a lot more software in its "repository".

i'll have to remember where i found it but there's a second cd you can download for this version of ubuntu that has a lot of the extras most people use to get a functional desktop. i'll post if i can find the link.
***EDIT***
It's called Ubuntu Plus.
"Dapper:
Dapper 6.06 CD
once you burn the CD and put it in your drive, open Synaptic and go to Edit -> Add CD-Rom...
This is also mirrored here, so if the above link doesn't work, give that a try.
Dapper Repository, add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
deb http://www.tikal26.net/ubuntu/apt dapper main"Desktop: Dual Xeon 2.8 GHz 1.5 GB RAM Ubuntu/XP Pro
Laptop: Macbook 2 GHz C2Duo 3 GB RAM OS X/ Ubuntu/ XP Pro

Please do, the two ISO's that I downloaded were Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Workstation. I didn't see an add-on CD. They must be following after Open SuSE since they also provided an add-on CD. Why they didn't make it a part of the base system I will never know.
