What are people oppions on Suse linux?
- 06-30-2006 #2
If the purpose of this thread is to find out whether or not you personally should use it I think you're going to find various conflicting opinions, none of which will tell you anything useful. No one can tell you whether a distro will work for you; you just have to try it and see.
If however you're just asking for opinions, that's another matter. I happen to generally like SuSE. My favorites were versions 9.1-9.3. I haven't been as impressed with the 10.x releases. They just aren't as polished to me for some reason.Registered Linux user #270181

i like it. i like it a lot
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

i like it and live 5 miles from novell so i guess i'm kinda drawn to it. i'll have to agree with moe though and say that i liked 9.3 best of all the releases i've tried.

I loved 9.3, it wasn't the first SUSE I tried but it was the one that converted me from Mandrake. I loved the artwork in it, I think they haven't come near since. Then again I really like a lot of the features of 10.1 and am very happy with it, aside from the package management issue.
As a SUSE user I am really jealous of synaptic/aptitude. I have never seen package management or repositories to rival it, but it is the polish and management tools of SUSE that keeps me using it. (he says while posting from Ubuntu....)

is there a patch from the package management glitch yet? that was my breaking point for 10.1 other than that it was awesome.

Suse is a very good distro IMO.
And btw you can get apt for Suse. How to know if you are a geek.

Yeah you can but it's apt4rpm. So no different yo using YaST really. What I like about Debian repositories is the vast amount of them and general ompatability. It seems far more together than rpm where every distro has it's own specific rpms. Fair enough Ubuntu to some extent is splintering the debian repositories but it is also replacing them with largely compatible and quite numerous releases. I use Automatix on Ubuntu to update it and I couldn't believe the number of packages available and how recent they were.
To be honest, from where I'm standing if I was to pick a distro solely on community activity Ubuntu would take the cake. Fortunately I gauge my choice of distro on partly more relevent factors such as usuablity, features, consistency.

I like Suse but have never run it for more than a few days at a time. It's just a bit on the heavy side for me, but if I were looking for a distro that had lots of bells and whistles, Suse would probably be it.

imo, 9.2 LOOKED the best, but 9.3 was better all round. though i didn't like the changes to KDE that closed the splash even though the desktop wasn't fully loaded (ala-windows). if the splash remained until the desktop was fully loaded, 9.3 would be perfect. on that note: is there a way to force the splash to stay as the desktop loads?
