I did not know that any Linux distro could work on a mac computer.

Tight.
I'm pretty sure most of the major distributions have support for macs old PPC architecture.

IT's funny how a lot of distros like Mandrake and SUSE tried to make linnux using as easy as possible. I think they were doing a good job too. Then Ubunu comes along, annoys a lot of seasoned linux users but manages to advance in leaps and bounds. They force simplified application choices - one of each, (I know slack does this but still...)They disable logging in as root directly to once and for all enforce it, give the CDs aways as well as allowing the usual downloads and base their system on one of the finest distros out there. Oh and they come from an angle that any enterprise interest is welcome and supported, but Ubuntu will always be free which is refreshing in the RedHat/Fedora,Novell/SUSE and 'you must pay for mandriva or we'll go bankrupt' era.
This distro really picked up steam and is getting attention from the media because although it still needs knowledge to be tweaked, it offers a pretty much ready to roll solution out of the box, at least in terms of perception.
Distrowatch has had it at the top of its interest list for all of living memory too.
Ubuntu haven't done anything new in my mind, but they seem to have done it all right. There isn't a day on digg without a few Ubuntu config/improve/why Ubuntu rocks articles. And I'm not surprised given their target audience.
SO I guess what I'm saying is Ubuntu has done some pretty good things for linux since its inception. Whether you like the distro or not. And what it has done is given it great publicity. It is the media darling of the linux world. About time too, I'm sick of Red Hat.

It took a while but my Ubuntu disks arrived in the mail today. They are still in the package. Although I can not afford it I now want a new computer for Ubuntu and Suse to use online. Maybe I can find someone to build me a computer just for Linux.

They say "switch to Ubuntu" 'cause it is probably the only distro they really tried. There are a lot of distros around and while Ubuntu is a nice distro, it is imho by no means the "best" (I could list a number of reasons). But to each his own.

An interesting (if misinformed and hilghly misleading) article. Just because Linux does everything that two Mac powerusers need doesn't mean it will work for every Mac user. I've said the same thing for some MS Windows users. Different OSes appeal to different people, and there's nothing wrong with that. They're just using the old bandwagon argument to give Ubuntu more publicity (like it really needs any more?)
I admit, one of the selling points for my MacBook Pro was that long after OS X became too resource-intensive for me to use it, I could always install a stock X86 Linux distribution on it. Apple tends to obselete their computers via hardware requirements in their new OSes.
I also agree that they're probably just saying "use Ubuntu" because it's the only one they've tried. There are others out there that will likely suit other folks better. Also, the screen shot of the prices for the MacBooks is utter BS. The regular MacBook doesn't cost more than $1999 at its most expensive. They took the pictures of the regular MacBook and Photoshopped (or GIMPed) the prices of the MacBook Pro into them to make their point that "they're still more expensive than comparable PC hardware..."
