Sony Gaming needs a good old boycott...
...to show them what consumer needs are. I was reading slashdot this morning and there was an article about a patent sony file in which allows sony to lock a game to one playstation. it apparently registers itself on one playstation and makes it so that the game cannot be played on any other playstation. this was done so that the games could not be re-sold. this just made me mad even though i dont play console games i still felt it should be your right to resell a game you have already played. Sony is pretty greedy. Companies used to cater to the needs of the consumer and now they just do what every they want because people will buy thier products. Just infuriating

linky
ps the article does state that sony has not released plans to have this technology in its next playstation. its the idea that infuriates me and if they were to do this in thier platform i for one would not even think of buying one.

I certainly share your sentiments with the way Sony has been acting in recent years. Their product quality in home electronics has been slipping as well. I used to be able to recommend a Sony TV or DVD player without hesitation. Now I'm not so sure.
As far as buying their games/systems, I still have an old gray Playstation. It's a good machine and I intend to play the old PS1 games I have for it until it breaks. I have no intention of buying any *new* Sony products in the future though. They've pissed me off too much.Registered Linux user #270181

- 07-13-2006 #4It's actually pretty hard to find decent *new* Playstation 1 games these days, so don't worry.

i already knew about this and it still seems far-fetched to believe even sony would do this. however, there is a reason for developing this technology so it's very possible that they plan to use it. i've already boycotted sony products and try to encourage people to do the same.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

Wow, that really is ridiculous. As has been said, there goes used games, or even taking a game to a friend's house to play.
Sony's recently been taking quite a string of bad hits in publicity (the rootkit deal, now this). Also, their cocky attitude with the PS3 has already been noted, and if this was included with the PS3, sales would be dismal, at least among gaming folks in the know, or so I should think.
Bah. I think that the solution is to just port all games to Linux. That'd solve a lot of problems right there

According to the SCEA CEO Kazuo Hirai there will be a Basic and Deluxe version of the PS3 and here's how it will go........
Basic Deluxe
Price $499 $599
Hard Drive 20GB 60GB
Blu-Ray Drive Yes Yes
HDMI Output No Yes
USB 2.0 Yes Yes
Memory stick/sd/
compactflash No Yes
Wi-Fi No Yes
And as you can see they are using Blu-ray instead of HD-DVD which I think sucks.

let me remind you that microsoft licences cant be transmitted from person to person. if you dont use your old win98 cd i dont think you are allowed to sell it because you dont legaly own it. all you own is the licence to use it. and people keep buying MS goods anyway.....All Empires rise and fall. The Microsoft Empire has already risen, only one way to go now...

although sony does have its hough spots, i wouldnt go so far as to say there game system is bad. look at the alternatives. you have microsoft, enough said, and then you have nintendo, witch used to be cool but is now not even making much of an effort. they are going to rely on the conroller to push them though the nest few years. they dont realy try to make hardware capable of competing with xbox or playstation.
not to mention sony hasnt exactly been hostile to the open source community either.
personaly i wish sega was still a contender. sonic beats all. but since they arent the next best thing is playstation.nVidia G-Force 6600GT (bfg) pci-e: amd 64 2000+ (939): 1024 corsair ram: 2X 80gb seagate harddisk SATA: plextor cd/dvd-read/write cdrom SATA

The bottom line for a video game system is whether or not the games are fun to play, not how many pixel shaders they have. I for one am glad Nintendo isn't jumping in the "we need more graphic power" boat. It's just assinine in my opinion. The last generation of video game systems hit a plateau that still hasn't been surpassed graphically. There's only so much realism you can throw into a game before it becomes pretty but boring.

I think that says something about the decline in the gaming industry. Somewhere around the year 2000 game companies stopped worrying about making fun, worthwhile games and started focusing on churning out rehashed, "prettier" versions of established franchises.
Nor has any other game company. This is irrelevant to me as a consumer when choosing a game system in which to invest.not to mention sony hasnt exactly been hostile to the open source community either.
Sega has (IMO) always made good games, they've just typically made terrible game hardware. I think the move to all-software and cross-licensing was the best thing that could happen to them as a company.personaly i wish sega was still a contender. sonic beats all. but since they arent the next best thing is playstation.Registered Linux user #270181
