opinions on some beta apps
i recently installed firefox 2 beta and gaim 2 beta. gaim 2 looks a lot nicer than the original and it finally supports receiving the special smileys from people (whether that's good or bad is your judgement
). firefox 2 seems no different (but most stuff is under the hood). one major problem is that the X to close tabs has been moved to the tab instead of left on the side, preventing me from quickly closing all the tabs by just clicking. shame, because i found that came in handy.
feel free to post replies to this and also to post your own opinions on beta apps that you've tried (try to keep it recent though
)
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

I haven't tried Firefox 2 myself (I'm an Opera man), but I've been using Gaim 2 Beta for a while now and I have yet to have a problem. I say make the switch.

i'm already using them, i was just trying to get a discussion going on what is good about them and what needs working on.
strangely i can't receive files on gaim 2 =/Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:

- 07-23-2006 #4sending and receiving files won't work. Neither voice chatting I think. That would be too hard to implement, since Yahoo and MSN are closed protocol.

I'm using amarok 1.4.1beta, which has a different interface. It has since been replaced and the new interface held off for amarok 2.0. I like it. Then again I always have liked amarok, just even more since the tagging improved in 1.4.0. I hate having wma's in my library but I'm stuck with them now. Transcoding lossy formats just isn't worth it.
I just upgraded to Gaim 2.0 beta 3. Or at least Synaptic says I have. However the help page says it's 1.5.1cvs. Is this correct? I know sometimes titles aren't updated until the RC stage.

I'm using Gaim 2.0 Beta 3, and I've had no 'out of the ordinary' file transfer issues. By this, I mean that my filewall prevents me from sending files, but that happened with Gaim 1.5. I like the new interface for Gaim; it was worth building a new Arch package to get it.

I'm using wine's latest beta. It works about the same for me as wine's earliest alpha that I used. That is to say, some apps work great, some work halfway, and some don't work at all.
I have MythTV installed and used to use it quite a bit. It's pretty flakey, but it's a fun toy.
I think DosBox is still in beta (probably always will be, like wine), but it works quite well. I haven't seen any problems with version 0.63 (the one in the Debian Etch repository)--it's been able to run anything I throw at it. There have been two newer releases, which means old bugs got fixed, new features got added, and new bugs probably came with the features and bugfixes.Stand up and be counted as a Linux user!

What does everyone think about gaim's release time? We are coming up on 1 year since the last stable release. And the gaim developers seem to have no desire of keeping the users updated on what is going on....

Yeah, it seems Gaim's release cycle has screeched to a grinding near-halt. Didn't they used to release every few weeks? That's what I've heard from those who've used it longer than I have.

- 07-24-2006 #10it used to be 3 weeks. They are doing a major rewrite, but still. If they could hold out another few months, debian stable will beat them
