total newby
I too, am a total newby to linux. I have apparently more experience with computers than the person who started this thread but still have problems, but then learning a new OS was the objective of this move. I just downloaded and installed SUSE 10.1 and found the install to go great. Internet connection, and the installed software worked imediately, but I too am having problems with installing software. Have tried repeatedly to install Firefox but no luck as yet. Will keep stumbling around till I hopefully get it right.

louberk have you found your way to YaST yet? It is the central configuration for SUSE and contains a software management tool. I would steer clear of installing from source, tarballs for static binaries and downloaded loose rpm files (sorry that sounds even more complicted
)
Either install software through YaST, or if you wish to try something newer (but I think better and many would agree) have a look around the forum for the smart package manager. Many people are turning to it as there are a few installer issues in 10.1 and it also comes by default with many software sources.
