If you rule out Unix-like OSes, you rule out all the good ones. (Don't know the stats on Apple.)

But there are lots of other up-and-comers that might be good someday:
    SkyOS
    Plan 9
    MorphOS
    AROS
    Syllable

And here are two lists of OSes:

I have no reliable source on this, but I was lead to believe that linux had more users last year, but I would imagine with all the funky new intel macs, iPods and general greater Mac awareness that they may have taken that back for the time being.

I think it's hard to determine who has more users between Apple and Linux, because you're comparing a commercial, (mostly) closed-source company with a non-commercial open-source collection of programs. There's really no reliable way to track Linux users. For Apple you could conceivably just look at how many people update their OS on a regular basis to get a good idea of the number of Mac users. For Linux? Umm... well the closest thing I can think of is the voluntary tracking project The Linux Counter, but since it's voluntary and not everyone knows about it, there's really no way for it to be totally accurate.
