Just look for an online music store that sells .mp3 files and doesn't use DRM. I have never had a problem running .mp3 in linux. Not sure if any store sells .ogg or open source formats.

also, a lot of bands will let you download a couple of their songs for free
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

To be on the safe side I'd take a look at the creative commons website (http://creativecommons.org/) in order to find music that is explicitly legal to download...
I have found some interesting pieces of jazz, acid-jazz, etc. there and I am happy with them...-D-

I think download.com have a legal music download website with a lot of genres, but sadly i think they use DRM
