    Question SATA or MotherBoard ???

    hi friends !!

what is a problem with SATA disks... ??? i read a lot threads... Linux distros are not recognizing SATA disks. SuSe 10.1 latest version ceating problems. same is with other distros. sometimes we write "this distro is pretty old, hasn't sata compatibility.

i wonder if its really a SATA problem or its coz of MotherBoard?

I've seen a few of these threads and I wondered myself. Certainly RedHat 9 which has been mentioned is too old, but I was under the impression that SATA controllers generally used a standard driver. In my case it is the sata_sil driver. I wonder is it problems with onboard controllers?

I've never had any issues with my SATA harddrives using motherboards that have the VIA or SiS chipsets. I've known folks who had no issues with Nforce chipsets as well. Keep in mind this is with 2.6 kernel versions of Linux. I have not tried installing older distros on my SATA drives (mostly because there's no logical reason to do so).

Many Linux installers' kernels don't yet support many Serial ATA chipsets.

after a lot of googling, i found this link...
