Hmmm... How is it that I forgot about Icaza? Then by association:

Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis must precede him because they devised The Gimp and its toolkit which nowadays is used for millions of projects...

Don't forget Ton Roosendaal. Blender 3d is almost becoming the de facto 3D animation suite on Linux just like gimp in 2D field.

    !

Dennis Ritchie and Thompson should be at the top of that list!!.
they made C and unix, there wouldn't be an unix-like system at these days.
I mean, NO Minix , NO Linux, NO NetBSD, etc.

I remember a comment several years ago by the freebsd team in an interview.

it related to the several unsung 'heroes' who wanted to remain just that, I mean, its great putting these people on a pedestal , but they are the only people from the project that you can associate it to. The others just work on , for the love of the project, thousands of them, they require no pedestal or admiration.

Yes you make a good point there which perhaps this thread detracted from.

Without people doing all that 'working for love' there wouldn't be a Linux community.

They have fun writing code, we have fun using it!
