don't know about slackware, but the different releases of gentoo are little more than changes to the liveCD environment. you can install gentoo now and run
    Code:
emerge --sync && emerge -NuDav system && emerge -NuDav world
and that will update the system to what is currently realeased (gentoo 2006.2 in this case).
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

my point was that there's no real "date" for gentoo so it doesn't matter. my system probably uses newer packages than the standard 2006.2 install will. obsessing about dates for gentoo is pointless. also, slackware should have information about release dates on their website and that will be more reliable than anything we can tell you. if they don't have a date then nobody knows.

there is no date for slackware pat has said acouple of times in his change log that it would be soon. they are on RC 3 and he said maybe one more and then it would be a final release. and he said that they have to update the documentation.

According to the roadmap, gentoo should be releasing 2006.1 sometime this month. But what d38dm8nw81k1ng has said is true, you can install any version and easily upgrade the whole system. In the past year, I've gone through around 5 different versions of the kernel, and countless upgrades. My sistem is as up-to-the minute as possible, and if 2006.1 comes out tomorrow, it will probably have a package or two with an older version than what I have.
