I loved Slackware some years ago (used it for a long time) and I still like it, but somehow, I found out that Mandriva is more what I was looking for. To each his own. Good luck with your Slack-box.

So I'm not alone. Maybe we should do a slot on Oprah?

I have yet to try this, I don't have a big cap only 3gb so I can't really go downloading distros. All I can do is wait until Linux Format or some other Linux magazine includes it or I can go to a shopping mall which is 20KM from here and then burn it to CD/DVD for free....But then again I'm 17 and don't have a car

I wouldn't exactly say love, but I like it for the most part. Slackware is one of those distros that you eventually start liking it. There's quite a few things about Slack's development that I don't agree with, such as BSD style init scripts, I like SysV's init a lot better for example.

hate it. sooms so archaic and underpowered. i dont like kde and wtf is wrong with 2.6 kernel being default. it needs floppies to install? there is so many better deistos than kde, like debian. debian beats slax in just about every way.

Slackware is far from archaic and the 2.6 kernel can be installed and running in 10 minutes. Where did you hear you had to install it with floppy disks? Slackware installs from CD as easily as any other distro, perhaps a bit easier. Underpowered? With the 2.6 kernel it's performance and stability runs circles around many of today's bloated distros. It comes with a variety of other WM's and XFCE besides the default KDE. Don't like those? FreeRock and Dropline Gnome are so incredibly easy to install it's almost no fun. Package management? Slapt-get works in the same way as apt-get Debian and solves dependencies in the same way.

I love Slackware! It's robust, simple and easy to configure if a little time is taken to learn a few very simple commands. It's the only distro I've never been able to break. If I were told my life depended on a Linux server running without problems for one year, I'd go with Slackware hands down over any of the others, and I've used all of them at some length including straight Debian.

Distros come and go. Nevertheless, Slackware still consistently maintains a number 9 to 13 range rating at Distrowatch.com's list of distros with the greatest number of "hits." Not bad for the oldest distro of them all.

Slackware is obviously not for everyone. Those of us who DO use it know why we love it and really don't care much what others think about us or our favourite distro.
