    Project - GPS on laptop.

I just got a new car (VW Golf GTI) and I'd like to now:
1.) Power my laptop through my car, and
2.) Receive GPS through my laptop.

But I am facing a small problem: I have no idea what to do or where to start.

I figure the laptop-in-car part will be easy. A mounted laptop stand and a cigarette adapter will probably do the trick.
But as far as the GPS goes: what is required in order to receive a GPS signal on a laptop? I figure I'll need both hardware and software. Does anyone have any know-how/experience with this kind of thing? Or maybe a few good ideas? Any and all help greatly appreciated!

you'll need one hell of a battery to power that laptop.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

i would suggest you take a look at freshmeat's website. they have all sorts of opensource projects listed for an (almost) infinity of uses.

however, when using gps in a car it would probably be wiser to use a tomtom gadget or any smaler and less power-hungry device.

a dc to ac inverter is an easy way to get power to it. just plug it into your cigarette lighter jack and you've got an a/c outlet in your car. just make sure you have one that has enough power for your laptop. i'd recommend at least 300 watt preferably more. shouldn't be more than $40
