Sounds a lot like this opinion piece:

    Linux will always be second-best

I personally could give a damn about either article because it's impossible to tell the future. Don't let that little nugget of wisdom get out though; lots of analysts are banking their careers on being corporate fortune tellers.

Linux was never created for displacing Windows. It was created as an ALTERNATIVE to other operating systems. Nothing more, nothing less. That is why I don't care about articles that invent/propagate something that ain't true, in this case that Linux must replace Windows completely.

I don't think it's a very good article. It assumes that Linux and MS are involved in some sort of competitive struggle. The language they use is the kind of corporate twaddle that has me laughing up my sleeve.

From the old and ignorant - Windows will displace Windows!!

A couple of days ago I ran into a young musician I met while he was clerking in a health food store. He is now driving a New York City bus which believe it or not is less stressful to him. At any rate he knew of my many previous computer problems as well as the computer problems of others. It was like someone had pressed the launch button; I was off and running my mouth and emotions about Linux. I Emailed him the address of my computer guy on Canal St. and told him to order a Free set of Ubuntu Linux disks at their website.

I informed him that he could run Linux from the disk and not have to install it on his machine. I know that deep within his mind he was thinking that if I ( whom he very well knows; knows considerably less about computers than he does ) could use Linux then absolutely anyone could use Linux.

I firmly believe that Windows is going to self destruct because of all of the ways that Microsoft insists on being able to monitor itself on every computer running it.
Just as I did; people are going to give up on Windows and try something else, or else give up the internet entirely, as so many people I know have already done.

I wouldn't like to see everybody using linux. If so when I say "I use Linux" nobody would stare at me ... or call me geek .

    I just love linux

I don't think Linux will replace Windows as a PC OS. But as a server? Well listen to this. My company has over 500 Windows/Linux servers. We have weekly reboots of Exchange servers and monthly reboots of W2K and Windows 2003 because they are unstable and the company doesn't want them to crash during peak times. On the other hand I have Redhat Linux servers with over 500 days being up and no problems. But we do try to reboot them before 497 days becasue of an oracle database problem.
So as a server the RedHat license is much cheaper too, like lees than half the price of Microsoft.
Linux has a lot to do to the desktop so the non-geeks of the world can point and click and get what they want.
As for this old geek-a-zoid I'll just hack away at the code.

Linux is third according to market shares I've seen...

Anyways. I don't really care about people like that. These articles come up all the time and it's always the same thing from both sides.

I do see linux taking over a lot of servers. As was mentioned above.

But I'm not sure if it will ever take over the personal computers. My CSC 325 instructor is even suggesting that I install windows on my spare partition. Which is odd because the tech dept here is heavily linux based.

The problem with the article is that the term "Market Share" is not defined and this is somewhat troublesome. Bear with me... MS Windows is a product that sells and as such market share can be measured. With Linux you can just burn an iso without having to enter any your name, address, etc. so all the millions downloading Knoppix or any other distro do not contribute to this "market share".

Summarizing, the article doesn't represent the situation of Linux correctly...

Here in Tunisia a lot of computers comes with Linux pre-installed ,that's mean

when you buy a computer you will save between 150 -200 $ the price

    of windows .
