There are actually a lot of threads around here where people are trying to get it to work. Search the forum for XGL.

Well, Mandriva 2007 and Mandriva One (2007 version Live-CD) will ship with AIGLX out of the box in two days (if they do not postpone the release date). One click and it's active in KDE and/or Gnome (if your hardware supports it). Works pretty well on my cooker box.

And: AIGLX and XGL are not new at all. :P

The Kororaa XGL Live CD has been around since about March of this year. XGL itself was released along with SuSE 10 if I'm not mistaken, which came out October of last year. While I'm glad you're excited about XGL (even if I don't share your enthusiasm) it's not exactly breaking news.

That part in bold made me chuckle. Still, some people really like the ghostly windows and the "cube" metaphor for the different desktops. I had a conversation with a friend the other day about which metaphors would work well for getting people to understand the different desktops thing, and the "cube" is pretty good, but then everyone will want six desktops instead of three or four. I guess a pyramid would be cool too. Of course, why not a moving flat image like a train or some kind of planetary thing, where you fly off to another planet whenever you change your desktop? Who do I talk to to recommend this stuff?

You can have up to 32 desktops on the cube with Compiz. XGL/Compiz shipped with Suse 10.1, and the competing AIGLX will ship in Fedora 6, Ubuntu Edgy and Mandriva as mentioned above. I think AIGLX is pulling more ground at the moment because it doesn't involve running two X servers currently - but this is pretty irrelevent to the end user as it is Compiz that provides all of the effects and this runs on both.

Gnome is including more cairo 'technology' in their next release including true transparency in some applications like gnome-terminal (I have it now and it looks great) and I'm sure Plasma in KDE4 will have some kind of integration for it.

If you want to request a new plugin for compiz (effect to you and me) you can do your talking at compiz.net. The latest releases have to option to slide between desktops rather than flipping the cube. There are some really nice effects all of which are coming along nicely and recent changes to compiz were focussed on speed and resource usage improvements. Weel worth a look.
