Gentoo is very nice but ...

I enjoyed installing Gentoo as everything went really nicely and was pretty fun and learned a lot of things (like what is a compiler FLAG). Building the kernel was also nice. Finished everything fine.

Now, wanted to install gnome but installing it is so LONG. I know it compiles everything from source to get better performance but compiling gnome is just too long. It took about 3 hours to compile 50 packages off 200. I'll maybe finish 100 more tommorrow while I'm in school.

I think there should be a way to install precompiled binaries for big packages.

    Just a thought

You would like Arch Linux then.

I have an Arch CD i downloaded but never tried to install, I'll give it a try this weekend. Or when I get a new hard drive. My 60 gigs aren't enough anymore

I second the recommendation for Arch. I've loved it ever since I started using it.

They don't have it for Gnome, but OpenOffice, Firefox, Azureus, etc. all do have binary packages available. They're called openoffice-bin, firefox-bin, etc.

I do understand your complaint though. Fortunately, once you get the big stuff built, it's easier in the future .

Thanks, I am liking gentoo a lot.
But I'll emerge in the traditional way firefox, I think it should be abot 15 minute.

I have noted that compiling in Gentoo is a lot faster than compiling in other distros.
