This is just Greenpeace BS, I'm sorry. Yes, there are harmful substances in the components for lots of electronics (usually in the battery). Yes, if your computer were to explode and shower you with said chemicals that would be bad. Is it a damned epidemic? No. Move along folks. Nothing to see here.
::EDIT:: Oh, and by the way, I own several Apple products and will continue to buy them regardless of what some hippie tells me.Last edited by techieMoe; 09-30-2006 at 07:30 PM.

Damn hippies. In my younger years I was a member of a few of these groups. But what really put me off is that you get at least as much propaganda, and often more from them as from any of the people they fight against. Still want to save the world, but I'll do my part alone. I drive a 55mpg car, recycle 60% of my household waste and use CFL lightbulbs. But I'm not going to put someone else down for not doing it.

Maybe that's why I'm so hypersensitive to a lot of RMS's preachings. Damn hippies.

Hmmm ... The bit about PVC caught my attention. No! It's not some weird fetish! I used to work in a factory and we made PVC pipes. Over time I realised that PVC is dangerous mainly when you set fire to it - it produces hydrochloric gas - but did that happen when I worked there? No. People get worried about nothing sometimes.

" Hippie " is a phase!! Some humans enter that phase and stay there. As I grew older I became much more " Conservative " and eventually " Libertarian " in my outlook toward life. As a youngster I heeded very few warnings; young and invincible go hand in hand. I have never, nor will I ever, own a laptop computer; I do not own or drive a car and venturing out into the streets of New York City at my age carrying a laptop computer is an invitation to be mugged.
I felt the story was " useful computer information " so I posted the link.
No Harm or Brainwashing was ever intended. No offense was intended, either!!
- 09-30-2006 #7Same is true for those white iPod headphones in pretty much any city in the US. I use non-descript black ones when I'm out and about.

I don't quite understand why ranking systems like this one are "just Greenpeace BS."
That's pretty damn cool. I respect people who follow guides like this one and include green-friendly on their list of things-to-look-for when buying a new product. This Green Electronics Guide ranks leading mobile and PC manufacturers on their global policies and practice on eliminating harmful chemicals and on taking responsibility for their products once they are discarded by consumers. Companies are ranked solely on information that is publicly available.
I will never understand why people bash others who care to be as green friendly as they can. If people want to continue to purchase products that rank high on environmentally-unfriendly lists then cool - but why bash others?
Does it make them feel better about their purchase and the products they own? If that's not the reason then why?10" Sony Vaio SRX99P 850MHz P3-M 256MB RAM 20GB HD : ArchLinux

- 10-01-2006 #9You don't have to understand it, but you're expected to accept it. I accept the fact that you believe it, though I firmly disagree. That's all I'm going to say about that.

It's the same reason why companies like Halliburton and the major oil companies in the US aren't being put under heavy investigation: they pay their political friends well. You're welcome to disagree, but I turn a blind eye on Greenpeace. They're not worth my time.I will never understand why people bash others who care to be as green friendly as they can.
