Software install
We can all agree that one of the best features in Linux is the package managers. This is a extremly easy way of installing lots and lots of useful apps.
Most of the programs installs without any problems on most distros, but there is always a few apps that won't install. Usually the progams i need or want the most like Mythtv for instance..
The last three distros I have tried had this problem (Suse10.1, Freespire, Ubuntu) I'm currently working on Mandriva.. Freespire didn't manage to install any of the programs I needed like accounting software. and most progams where outdated.
I rather not have the option to install som great software if it isn't going to work.
what is the problem...???
- 10-13-2006 #2I think the problem with the type of packages you mentioned is that they aren't very 'mature' yet, and some of them are poorly designed. MythTV is notoriously hard to install for example.

I suspect that a few packages would be better compiled from source than bundled as rpms or deb binaries, but this is often very hard. Even package management systems have their faults, but I'm less sure about this aspect of things.I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso
