    you just made me laugh

Look, all I just did is typed:
    Code:
    apt-get upgrade
and it is downloading and installing the newest versions of all the packages
    currently installed on my system.

If this is not convenient, then what is?

Jesus, some of you are getting a little rough. His post was not negative at all, and TechieMoe's original response was quite adequate, and a few of the additional ones.

Why would he post a rebuttal? He has said nothing bad about linux. The way I read his post, he was asking for guidance and explanations of things that he did not understand before.

    Who was being rough?

Like most people who've used Linux for more than an hour, I've found only the opposite to be true:

    1. Both Mepis and Ubuntu can be installed in under a half hour. Windows takes at least an hour, not to mention all the rebooting you have to do after each time you configure something or install updates.

    2. Ubuntu and Mepis are both one-CD distros that can be run as fully-functional operating systems as live CDs and can be used to install the entire operating system (with an office suite and other productivity applications) in a default installation. Try that with Windows.

    3. Try IceWM or Fluxbox and say that again... or even XFCE.

    4. Installation of software in Windows is really inconvenient. How many internet searches do I have to do to find quality free software that's not spyware-ridden? How many times do I have to click next and then reboot? With most Linux distros, I can install ten or twenty programs at once with one command, and the package managers make it easy to search for good, free programs.

Apologies. Rebuttal was the wrong word.

I was really wondering if he was reading the responses to his post, and, if so, would he reply to us with the experiences that brought him to his negative (and rather surprising) conclusions about linux.

I guess I should have phrased it a little better.

Maybe I was little rough. Sorry. All I meant to say is that it is not that difficult to work with
Linux. You just have to give it some time and learn few more things. It's always the case when you start using any new operating system. And if you have some question, just ask. There is aways a chance that someone will know the answer.

The only advantage I have felt is that it is open source which is good for scientific researches.

So why so many people are crazy about it? Everybody here needs to do researches on Linux? I am really puzzled...

Please do not blame me of my ignorance and I am just probing...
This sounds like flamebait... I am sorry but it does...

From your previous posts you seem to have been unable to even run linux so I find your post without merit... Even more, the fact that you haven't even replied to the thread that you started leads me to conclude that you are not really interested in linux...

I really don't see anything productive coming out of this thread.
