Concern about techieMoe's closing of the Marijuana thread...
I just saw the Marijuana poll below closed and I went in there to look at the reasoning. I'm not trying to make this a HUGE deal but I found the reasoning behind the close pretty surprising.
"Not only is this mostly a political issue.."
It being a political issue should not be a reason for a close especially since it's in the coffee lounge where it states....
The Coffee Lounge
General chat about anything that goes, a good place to introduce yourself and say hi, tell a Joke, or just relax.
so why not bring up a political issue?
"it's likely to cause very unpleasant arguments on both sides..."
This statement makes it seem to me that you don't have much confidence in your members, that they can't carry out a normal conversation and have a mindful and respective argument if it is necessary. The point of a forum is for people to converse and socialize.
I thought this would of been a good topic to discuss, and I was wondering myself how everyone stands on the issue since this is an issue that has been brought up many times in my English class. I would understand if this thread was brought up in the Ubuntu section but again it is the Coffee Lounge
Again, I don’t mean to criticize/bash/attack you techieMoe, I just found the reasoning of your close to be somewhat objective. It might seem I am proving your point that this will bring up arguments but again my post is not an argument, I am just expressing my concern.
Thanks for reading,
Tomek

Allow me to say that it's not that we do not have confidence in our members, on the contrary, we have lots of confidence in this community, and I believe many others share our opinion. But when it comes to political issues, and after experience, it'll become a flame bait whether we like it or not, so ending them sooner is rather better...

Marijauna, abortion, etc., etc., etc. are issues that just about everyone has unmoveable positions and opinions about. I doubt if humanity will ever come to any concensus about these issues. Why ruin or stain the atmosphere here at LinuxForums with them.

I agree that maybe no one will come to terms with abortion. But marijuana? I think that the only reason it is illegal is because of misinformation. How is alcohol legal when it causes so many deaths per year? How many due to good 'ol Ganja? Zero.

I recommend we all drop this subject. The original question as to why the thread was closed has been answered. Please do not create another thread about it.
