Personally, I think the good and bad sides of things are how people use them, not the ideas/technologies/whatever themselves. It's great to see people using cell phones for emergency calls, for example, but it really annoys me to see their potential wasted by others as they become toys for rich kids. Same with video games - you can play some really fun ones which make you think for yourself (like Myst/Riven/Exile and huge RPGs like Morrowind), but if you do nothing BUT play Doom all day, you lose your social life and everything else (and of course that's what gets noticed the most).

This reminds me - about 20 years ago when I was young (in my 30s) somebody started ranting to me about the evils of RPGs (specifically D&D). My response was that Monopoly is much worse. Where the normal mode of playing D&D is good vs evil, the basic premise of Monopoly is "it's all about me".

I think good RPGs are pure escapism; and fun!
