From my experience, the big advantage of Mepis over the Ubuntu family is that Mepis inlcudes non-free video and Wi-Fi drivers in its default install and is pretty good about auto-detecting and configuring all your hardware. That makes it easier to get up and running on a new install (or live CD).

On the down side (depending on how you look at it), the Mepis maintainers don't do the amount of customization that Ubuntu's teams do for improving user-friendliness. It's more a matter of selecting the best of what's already available and putting that in the default install. Personally, I like this approach because it makes the system mostly compatible with the mainstream Debian archives, so you can tap into the Debian software repositories or install just about any .deb package with no worries.

... but with MEPIS 6.0 using the Ubuntu repos, there really is no difference 'internally' between the two anymore.

before, < 3.4, MEPIS was all Debian, and frankly, i dont care too much for ubuntu and their methods of doing things.

From my little experience with Linux, I like Mepis better then Ubuntu because it just works, right after my installation. I installed it on two different machines with distinguishly different hardware configurations, they both work without fuzz. no messy CLI configuration, no need to deal with all this xorg, xfree 86 files BS.
Simplicity is the beauty, just the way an OS should be.

Just put in my 2 cents.

as they say on another forum: Why cant Kubuntu do that?

I can write to my NTFS XP partition with NO problems. Why can't Kubutu do that????

Mepis runs much faster than Kubuntu (on MY system anyway I might have to add). I couldnt watch a simple avi in Kubuntu it was so choppy.

the people at Mepis forums are way better and nicer than the people on Kubuntu forums(in my experience I might have to add)

I got more but thats enough of a reason for me.

never liked the fish tank on the taskbar but other than that mepis is pretty good. though certain wireless drivers stopped working from 3.4 to 6 but i think in 6.5 its been fixed.
