I remember reading something like that in The Economist about a year ago.
Google certainly wants to provide a large number of web-based services and applications, that's no secret to anyone. But to which extend will that replace a full featured OS ? We're a long way from there. Not everyone has the bandwidth for it, nor is the technology ready.
Just look at YouOS."To express yourself in freedom, you must die to everything of yesterday. From the 'old', you derive security; from the 'new', you gain the flow."

That's quite the link antidrugue. Although I would never use it, it's an interesting concept. It is actually fairly well laid out and set up.

I don't get web OSes. I just tried YouOS and another one called EyeOS (they let you demo it, I think everyone should try it), but this new trend still makes no sense! You still need an OS on your computer anyway, not to mention I bet it's insanely expensive to keep the server.

At the technical school I go to we have a webOS, it's nice for accessing programs I don't have at home so I can get some work done.

I speak without much experience, but the WebOS idea seems somewhat silly to me. That YouOS site has a web browser, for instance. Why would I need to run a browser inside a browser?

I wouldn't be surprised if in a year or two we see the release of this 'Goobuntu' or another Google Linux distro. Google have the branding and the good reputation and in a time when people are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with some of the other corporate movers that branding may work well.
I know if I handed someone a live disk and told them it was GoogleOS, it didn't need to run antivirus/antispyware and came with everything they'd need for free they'd probably jump at the chance to use it. There is a sense of trust there for many imho. And all of that is just Linux with a Google brand.

I agree 100% with that! It seemed to me that when Google annouced it ran custom installs of Ubuntu on their internal computer was when Ubuntu's success really sky-rocketted. Of course there were other influences, but in my opinion Google saying "This is what we use" made a lot of people think it can't be bad if Google is using it.

...and in this case they'd be getting something which was trendy AND useful! Personally, I think it would be great if it got more people using Linux and gave it more exposure.
