    Linux

This is the story of an old man and the learning experience of linux. For some history I have been in electronics for over 40 years and have worked on the most sophisiticated systems ever designed including missle systems in the military.. In the late 80's I went back to school and got an associates degree in computers At the time Intel was shifting from the 80286 to 80386 Does i386 sound familiar? In those days I was heavily involved in assembly language which considered 1 MB of memory at the limit..

After that my jobs reverted back to broadcast maintenence as engineer and chief engineer .. I have been there and done that so I am not looking fo self or trying to feed ego.. So this is aimed at the the wannabes and experts in programming Linux .

I have evolved over the last 6 years with karaoke and dj software to play gigs that make 50-$100 plus per hour..So I am not investigating linux from a hobbyist attitude but a simple efficient system to get away from Microsoft Windows which with each release becomes less and less efficient.. I still have the feeling that I can use Linux for an efficient basic system to do this but the experiences over the last 3 weeks have me doubting again that is not ready yet...

I downloaded Sarge and 6 cd's and installed .,,. The system is a 3.2 gig p4 with 1mb cache and 800 frontside buss. Sarge didnt know the video brd but I did learn how to reconfigure xsystem-xrfree86 altough it didnt work all the time.. Next was etch which I downloded the first 4 cd's It was better than sarge and even used my M-Audio delta44 sound brd..

The current windows player software I use is Roxbox I downloaded Code weavers Crossover linux and tried to install Roxbox I tried for 2 weeks to no avail I had windows registry problems with the data base and visual basic I even got Access to work ...
Frank the programmer for Roxbox got it to work on ubantu

So today I downloded the latest version of ubantu... It installed so I downloaded alien gnome-apt and another one and did a
download of alien and gnome-apt I did a dpkg -i *deb and had some dpend errors so I downloaded them and did the same dpkg -i *deb The next thing I knew was a total crash I coudnt even boot and log in,.. Renstall...After 2 more reinstalls and doing things that worked with etch I was faced with libc6 depends on libc6-dev and libc6-dev deprnds on libc6
When going into synaptic I ger some belligenent errors about needing to go online and getting the latest resource list This id the most recent version? With a real working system you dont go online If you need updates you downlod with a menial comp check for virus and transfer..

So if there is anybody here with any knowledge about linux and understand what I need and forget about all the buzz words, KISS and can give me some advise then ackowledge I am about ready to blow off Linux again for a viable system...

It seems to me that etch tesing is more stable the than ubantu with the same kernel... At least I didnt crash it with a simple attempt at trying to install a deb... A deb.....

errr... why would you need gnome-apt? Use synaptic instead? Where did you downloaded that alien and gnome-apt?

a package with official extension don't meant it wont harm your system. Specially, individual created packages CAN destroy your system, if they include files that'll replace the system's.

For softwares you need, search for a proper version that really intended for your system. But try to search from the reccomended repository first, then other sources later if you can't find it from the official repository.

You are trying to run a windows application not on windows, through an imperfect windows interpreter. Mileage will vary no matter what anyone tells you. That guy who ran it, ask him if it was fully functional. It may not have been. Again, this is a windows application. And if you're going to install things on linux, use repos or compile the source instead of installing random debian pkgs; that's not reliable.

Sarge is a version of Debian, Ubuntu is Debian based.
So you tried two Linux distros that have the same base. Should there be a problem with what you want, it might be showing up in both cases.

    Deb comes from Debian

No matter where you come from, or what you did (something military?).
That's no guarantee for succes with Linux, or what OS for that matter.

Because Linux comes in so many flavours, so does the software. The same software can be found in several versions, each optimised for specific distros.

Before classifying Linux as "not viable", you could consider starting all over with it and asking us here at LF for help. You will get it with all best intentions. Any particular reason you chose Debian and Ubuntu?

    Linux =! Windows
Please, stop thinking in Windows ways if you really want to give Linux a try.

Hi karyoker and welcome to Linuxforums.

By your resume' you obviously are lot more intelligent than I am. So how could it be that I have developed the skills to administer fifteen Linux boxes which range in distro from Crux to CentOS, Slackware, Debian Sarge and even Ubuntu? And I'm just a good 'ol boy red neck from South Carolina! It's because learning Linux is not so much related to ones intelligence as it is to one's ability to adapt to a new way of doing things. You say you are an old man. I just turned 49 so even if you are older than I am, I'm still far closer to your age than most of the whippersnappers on this forum. I admit learning the Linux way after using Windows for years was a big and often frustrating step, but it was only when I decided Linux cannot be operated as another version of Windows that I really started understanding it. I don't mean this to sound harsh, but I would much rather help along the occasional home Windows user who wants to learn Linux than the seasoned Windows IT professional. The occasional home user brings no preconceptions with him/her, and their minds are more open to learning new tricks. I'm willing to wager that if I can learn Linux, you can too. You just have to stick with it and give it the same amount of patience you did the fist time you started learning about missiles systems for the military. Everyone here is willing to assist with your questions, just ask. Soon enough, things will start making sense, and you will be navigating Linux with as much aplomb as you did those missiles.

I had to grin at the replies I got and not surprised by them..

That post was written with alot of frustration but bear in mind that most of the frusrtration comes from years and years of ripping cd's for about 25.000 tracks, getting rid of dupes, typos in the books.. And most of the frustration comes from evolving thru 3 or 4 different windows hosters As windows changes to another form ie 98 se to xp the inefficiency multiplies..

With the hoster I use now I can record singers live into wav files.. With XP it gradually bogs down with multiple recordings and fails as resources are gobbled up...

I am really surprised at alot ok linux stuff in fact I play tracks in xmms into my sond system and it is comparable or even better than winamp in windows However winamp can use plugins foe example to generate graphics screens from a cdg file which is syncd with the mp3. One is shrinked and put on the desktop and the other one is full screened and piped to the singers monitor on stage...

I know that any disro in linux would kick ass as far as efficiency however there is not much karaoke support for karaoke software yet. If I could wine what I need Id start using linux then even start providing support for KJ's and DJ's

I am down to this error trying to get Roxbox to work on any distro..

    error

So as you can see Im fighting windows errors and linux errors at the same time which is frustrative too

Didnt mean to ruffle any feathers but did get reactions ubuntu or any distro is the OS of the future if I can adapt and make it work....

    Thanks,
    Ollie

I hope the above reply explains it more....It is not hard to adapt but when one is as windows oriented as I am it takes time and one cant do it in a couple of weeks like i tried to do it.., I really like ubuntu and linux in general but the one complaint I have about is about eveything I do "are you root?" So I log in as root and get a warning message every time I do something &&^&&^ ...

I tried to wireless to my laptop today and hooked up a netgear wireless router to the ubuntu I can ping between either one and it works I dont see the ubuntu system on the laptop and when i tryu to share a folder I get and error that SMB has to be installed in synaptics it shows installed..

This computer will never be internetted but if I do need to Ill cat5 crosswire to a laptop and do it that way If I ever figure that out,..

Not exactly the same thing karyoker, but I use Linux in my restaurant/night spot/pool hall. I thought you might be interested in seeing a shot of Xmms on CentOS hard at work cranking out Carolina Beach tunes in .ogg and .mp3...
