ya, i always thougth opensource programming was either sponsered by a company or done as a hobby;

- 12-28-2006 #5I don't think anyone can say Richard Stallman doesn't have a very strong passion for Open Source and Free Software. To the best of my knowledge, he survives off donations, but I could be wrong. He's never been *against* getting paid for his work (in fact I think he jokingly charged several hundred dollars for Emacs at one time).

You *can* make money writing open-source software, like the guys at Red Hat, but it seems like it would be very hard, especially getting started.
