In my day we didn't even have window managers. The only color we had was green from our terminals.

Luxury. In my day we didn't even have displays. We had to hope we didn't make any mistakes and could only check when the output punch card for the operation was created.

    Just an update...

I'm frequently moving around through the various desktop environments and windows managers, just playing and experimenting with them, but I've gotta say that the latest version of Gnome (2.20.x) has finally kept me with it for more than a few days.

It still feels just a bit slower than KDE does on my machines, but it seems to be extremely stable and looks quite polished. It might very well become my default DE, at least until KDE4 is officially released and I'm ready to experiment again.

For now I am using Gnome, but if I can get enlightenment up and running, I'm gonna try it. To me KDE seems a bit too...well ugly. The gear thing on the menu is too big and stretches the bottom bar. If things were smaller, more simple, as well as being easy like it already is, then I'd gladly switch. But now, just not for me.

I am currently using KDE, but I don't really have a preference between KDE and Gnome. I haven't used any others enough to judge them.

Take a look at Fluxbox, xfce, Openbox, icewm, RatPoison and windowmaker.
Then you might be able to judge.
And you see that xfce is the best Or RatPoison

I just tried Fluxbox......I didn't really like it. Its alright, but nothing special. A little too minimalistic for my liking. I'm sure I will try the others soon though.
