Linux or Windows?
I have no idea. I love the Linux os, but i currently run windows. I can't decide if i should switch to linux or not. I do a lot of video and audio editing, so I don't know if I should switch to linux or not. Is there programs for video editing for Linux? I also do a lot of art work, including fractal art.
Should I switch?
- 01-16-2007 #2I realize your position, but we really can't decide that for you. There are ways to try out Linux without doing any damage to your system (LiveCDs for instance). I would recommend that you try several versions and see if it works for you.

As my kind collegue already said, you need to find out for yourself if it will suit your needs.
If you have the room/space in your pc, you could opt for dual-booting Windows / Linux.
Or even swap your current harddisk for a empty one and install Linux and test it...
There are several different flavours of Linux.
Hard to tell which one will be your cup of tea

Personally, I have multiple machines. My primary desktop is dual boot and I have several servers running Windows. Most of the time I am in Windows on my desktop, but I SSH into my servers all the time. You could always get yourself a cheap box and have it do some kind of server function. file server, web host, domain controller, whatever you want.
You can still be a Linux user and not have it as your primary OS.I praise Webmin and PuTTy!

When I wanted to move to Linux, I did a dual-boot for a month. It gave me time to check the minimal things I "demanded" from myself required to move.

You don't need to decide, your windows will mess up someday, and without a windows cd, you'll use linux
- 01-18-2007 #9I would recommend getting several distro on Live CDs. That's the easiest and safest way to test if Linux is right for you. If you decide that you do like Linux, there is always WINE/Cedega, which continue to improve every day in terms of the supported Windows software.

The original question could be applied to choosing between Beer and Wine.
Both have their merits.
If you do any serious gaming you need a Windows box. It's a no brainer.
For all else a *nix box will do.
If you only have one box, dual boot.
