Welcome to the forum and Linux world.

    This are called distros (FC,redhat,ubuntu).
They all have same desktops (Gnome,KDE....), But different package managers and many other things. You have to choose distro you like (look on distrowatch.com)

For n00b ubuntu is recommended(easy to install and use)....I personaly started with Fedora Core.

I'm not so sure Ubuntu is "automatically" the best for someone new to Linux.

When starting, I'd consider good support (active forums, newgroups, mailinglists, etc.) more valuable. Because a newbie will have a lot of questions and it can be frustrating to have many questions without getting the right kind of answers.

    Hi, rin
I’m new to Linux also and have to agree with Redman about finding understandable answers to questions about Linux for newbie’s. After beating my head against the wall for the last couple of weeks trying to get Mandriva running, someone in this forum suggested Mepis and although I haven’t tried it yet I did spend a couple of hours last night reading their support forum and I found answers to my general Linux questions in just a couple of hours of reading and it was all in an understandable Language. LOL
Like I said, I haven’t tried it yet but I’m going too.

    SOOooo many flavors of Linux
