Slack 12 rant is up. The world has not come to an end and I was not drunk when I wrote it.

Just as an update to this too, I recently unearthed a copy of Sabayon 3.3 that was sent to me a long time ago. I'd written it off as lost in the mail. I'll try that one out too, but probably not until I finish this last Harry Potter book.

I fully expected a scathing rant as well. At least this one won't show up on OSNews any time soon.

Moe,

Is it my impression or developers are reading reviews and improving distros accordingly? A 3 rating for Slackware from you is extremely rare...

could be that Patrick Googles his name from time to time and Moe and a few others including myself have made comment on the internet such as to make the decision to make changes accordingly. I am sure the Moe Rants would come up quite a bit on a Patrick name search.

googled his name and the infamous Moe ran on 11 comes up in the 4th page or so.

Hi techieMoe...

I installed Slackware 12 and ran into this same thing you wrote in your rant...
Quote:
I inserted a data CD and was greeted by a wonderful Konqueror error: "A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume member "Mount" error "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal").

I'm sure you all just jumped out of your seat and said, "Of course! I know exactly what that means!" Don't all stand up at once. I assumed it was a permissions issue and manually mounted the disk as root from a console.
I agree with you... This is rediculous! Why not just give the user the same remedy I'm about to give...?

To grant a user permission to mount and use the cdrom, go into kuser as root, and have user added to groupes "cdrom" and "plugdev." Then the error message goes away and the user can use the cdrom.

Hmm. Interesting. I'll see if I can get a download of it. I can hear the vodka jokes already.
