Rant for Lunar 1.6 "Moose Drool" is up. True to form, it's already been posted to the Tuxmachines site. I think perhaps the fellow has an automated script attached to my RSS feed. Surely he can't be monitoring my site that closely.

Thumbs up

Nice one Moe. I like the improved typography: makes things easier to read on-screen.

Excellent rant of Lunar, TechieMoe.
I once tried Lunar and did not like it at all.
One of the things I found to be very strange and not to my liking, was that if you wanted to install something, you couldn't just "su into root".
You needed roots full path. I had to "su - into root".
That took some getting used to.
Among other strange things.

Sourcemage is better than Lunar in some respects, but, I would not recommend it for a rant.
Unless you wish to endure serious pain.

Yep, nice rant indeed.

Be honest, I'm sure you secretly liked a lot that "fast booting command-line Linux".

Yes, there was a part of me (one that thrived in my first 2 years at the university) that enjoyed it. Then the current me stepped in and asked, "But how will you make your comic?" Party pooper.

Oh! You reviewed Lunar! Thanks! Isn't it a piece of crap?

You're welcome. Don't start expecting this quick of a turnaround on rants though; I just had surprisingly little to do this week.

I wouldn't want to give away the ending for people who haven't read the rant, now would I? Haha.

Yup that was a fair look at Lunar. I like it better than gentoo, but being a source based distro it's still like pulling teeth. What I like best about Lunar is the documentation, centralized in man pages. They really want to provide enough to make it easy to setup and customize your install, and the installer works, hoorah! The community for Lunar is very small, the forum is like a ghost town. Not a good thing.

------ but it might not be long before Gentoo gets a face lift-------------
Anyway I took a look at Gentoo's 2007.0 handbook and I think Gentoo is about to become much more easy/usable out of the box. It looks like they are establishing a community maintained binary repo that includes all of the major desktops. It's a good idea. I hate portage now, too many broken ebuilds, but I see that there are alternatives to portage that gentooers are turning to now increasingly, I think it's only a matter of time before a fork is made to officially choose one of the alternatives.
