Anyway I took a look at Gentoo's 2007.0 handbook and I think Gentoo is about to become much more easy/usable out of the box. It looks like they are establishing a community maintained binary repo that includes all of the major desktops. It's a good idea. I hate portage now, too many broken ebuilds, but I see that there are alternatives to portage that gentooers are turning to now increasingly, I think it's only a matter of time before a fork is made to officially choose one of the alternatives.
But isn't the main feature of Gentoo the portage system? What is the point in running Gentoo if I am just installing the binaries? How is any different than any number of distros now?

Well the portage system still exists, and nothing prevents you from using it. Having more binaries just provides you with more flexibility. Portage is still and will be Gentoo's package manager. If Gentoo has both portage and binary install methods for software packages, it will finally, truly, become the linux equivalent of FreeBSD (which offers both ports tree and binaries). Instead of loosing it's uniqueness, I would argue that it would be elevated to the most flexible linux distro. And isn't flexibility Gentoo's goal?

And with the addition of better alternatives to portage like paludis, it seems that Gentoo can finally backup it's words about "being about choice."

  1. I removed the Hardware and Software rants sections. They were old, not as popular as my OS rants, and honestly I got tired of maintaining them.
  2. The comic archive pages are very plain now. Seriously, barren. I may or may not mess with this in the future because there's just so damn many of them and I don't want to have to do the work. I think the "plain" look is functional.

Of course I'm up for suggestions on future rants. Enjoy.

::EDIT:: As I state below, the RSS feed is up now and should be working.
I enjoyed the rants very, very, very much. Good clean look to it.

Red face Another suggestion

Hello Moe,

This suggestion is for a serious review of Linux's predecessor: Minix (http://www.minix3.org/) Maybe it wont be fantastic but history says that L. Thorvalds played with Minix (An academic project by Andrew S. Tanenbaum in his book Operating Systems: Design and Implementation 3/e) before crafting Linux. I mean, maybe it is not 'free' but it is still important for history's sake.

Thanks Moe!

A rant for Ubuntu "Feisty" is in the pipes, and I'll look at Minix as well. I also received a request for another look at Mepis. I wouldn't expect anything to show up on the site for at least a week however, since I'm going to be busy moving.

As an interesting aside, by some strange internet voodoo one of the maintainers of the Lunar Linux project found my rant and (here's the surprising part) actually took my criticisms constructively.

I've been given a link to an alpha ISO to try out. If some of the issues I ran into (such as the broken XOrg package) are fixed, I may add an amendment to the rant to show that they are indeed working on it.

I'm impressed when someone takes my comments with a grain of salt and uses them constructively, even if they were never meant to be taken seriously.

Thanks for sharing this Moe... I am surprised! No flames from the Lunar guys?

Seems to me that people are taking your reviews seriously because, even with scatological references, they are honest...

Rant for Ubuntu Feisty is up. It's not my most creative negative rant. What can I say, I was tired and just overall pissed at the distro by the end.

Considering I'd had other problems with my VM and this version of Ubuntu, I decided to check and see if this was yet another documented problem. Turns out it is.
"it is" takes you to that same page.
