I'm just more of a GAIM person. Probably has something to do with it being my first multi-protocol Linux IM client.

Forums are about as "instant" as I get, these days. I used icq about 4 years ago but very quickly grew tired of the instant concept.

Ditto. I was never that much into im, but email and forums are good enough for me now. I haven't run a im client for like 9 months.

I have to vote for GAIM just because it's the only one I've used in Linux. Like others have said, I don't use IM enough to care about other options, as long as GAIM works when I need it to.

IMs are great if you want to have a quick chat with a frien who's online. But it's up to you to decide to use Ims or not :P

    I enjoy chatting very much

Well I don't use IM's that much either, however I have used both Kopete and GAIM and at first Kopete was better for me because it was easier to use for me...but when I got the hang of GAIM it was just better and a little less bloated (If an IM can be bloated :P ).

I hardly ever chat on IM's maybe twice a month or so with my sis in the UK...but I'm mostly on IRC (Viva irssi)

i like googleTalk. i don't need to chat with a lot of people online. Mostly just friends who i'm going to meet in a few minutes. And we're both online so we just IM eachother that we're leaving. Sharing links and what not. i'm not a chatter.
