I've been around this thing for a long, long time. 1994 was when I got my first look at Linux. RedHat 4 or 5 (I think) was the first I installed.

My first exposure to Linux was in 1999, but didn't start using it seriously until sometime in 2000. My first distro was Debian Potato (which was a pain to install), so I switch to Mandrake 5.x (which was basically Redhat 5.x with KDE).

Forgive me for being really pedantic but the options don't actually make much sense as in theory everyone could vote "less then 50 years" and be telling the truth because 1 day, 1 month, 1 year or 49 years are all "less then 50 years".

    Sorry.

Four years now. I heard about it in about '98 and was interested, but I didn't follow it up. Still learning btw: my training is not yet complete - maybe I should go for a Luke Skywalker avatar instead?

At least now I have a stable OS ... that took a while. Thinking along the lines of web servers / applications now. That's the thing that holds my interest for the time being.

Lol ... yes. I liked the option, 'My whole life so far.' You can imagine the scene in the hospital:

    'It's a healthy baby!'
    'Parents, at last!'
    'Is it normal?'
'Welllllll ... it's got 3 penguins tatooed on its forehead.'
    'Noooo! It's the Anti-Gates.'

must be getting on nearly two years now... wow, time flies when you're having fun.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

Like Fingal, I first heard about it in 1998. Unlike Fingal, I had too much time on my hands (being stationed in Korea and not interested in drinking the time away), so I started toying around with RedHat, then Debian, then RedHat again. Trying to use Linux remained an occasional hobby until about three years ago, when I started using Linux almost exclusively (at home, anyway).

Like Roxoff, I have been using Linux since around '94, it all started with Redhat Deluxe Edition 5.2 and I haven't looked back since. Many happy thanks, Torvalds.
