Thats a very interesting viewpoint. I acknowldge what he said and I would agree with him in most points but Linux is fully customisable, free, millions of people backing you, and doesn't violate your privicy.

That is my biggest complaint about Microsoft. I do not think its necessary to have to prove to Microsoft that I bought a license. But I do see some amount of the zealotry come about due to an amount of Ideology associated with an Operating system. That is true with both sides of the coin. Windows Users on a whole have as many Idealist Zealots as does Linux. I have personally worked with a few.

Have you seen M$ Vista's EULA? Basically there is a part that says M$ can remove or add programs to your computer without your knowledge. That violation of my privacy coupled with daily checks on my product key and license and the contents of my computer searches being sent to Microsoft have converted me to Linux. I may well use Vista but that machine wil not be connected to the internet and if it is I am blocking EVERYTHING originating from M$!!!

my reason for switching was about fun really I like what I can do with Linux. It is much more fun and I learn more stuff. I want to start programming on my systems at home just haven't been motivated to do so. Another thing i like about linux is i dont have to wait nearly as long to get cool new features maybe a few months or a year, how long for windows? beryl is the example i would use. Fun WM that i havent tried yet but it was out way before anything a commercial company could provide.

Maybe if you live in a Third World country and like to work for peanuts. Linux throws off very little cash; much of the revenue that comes from it is tied to services and hardware, and these services are generally, though not always, discounted below what they would be for a “proprietary” product
Do you know how much I can make typing 6 shell command on a server? Last time I made around $150 because I installed a program. Not even compiling or dependency checking, the tarball contained binaries and a README on how to copy them to /usr/local ...

some of his points were way off base. he had a valid point that security starts with people no matter how secure the system.

another thing i love about linux is that right now i am typing this from a ubuntu live cd that recognized my atheros chipset d-link dwl-g650 and got it working on boot. I am also able to chat on my IM.

I wish someone who had coding experience could make a universal driver for USB adapors and monitors. My screen and USB wireless adaptor wont work with any distrubution of Linux!!!

P.s. I know it won't happen but we can wish cant we?

It was okay. He went on a bit too much though ... Yeah: I agreed about the security bit, but didn't think that was news really.
