Because they are Linus's favorite animal IIRC.

okeiz, so i was reading about that post here titled the "origin of tux." i was thinking maybe finland has lots of penguins. or why not a polar bear? if there are penguins there should be polar bears too. polar bears are cute too. hehehe.. .

    This is a common misconception.

Finland ( or Sweden or Norway for that matter)
does not have penguins or polar bears.
Trust me, I live here =)

Sweden don't have them, but Norway do (Svalbard)

ahhh.. . i see it now. sweden is bounded by norway to its west and finland, east. so finland and sweden doesn't have penguins, i'll just have to trust you, kriss and ooop. not unless the penguins would want to swim all the way from the norwegian sea, down to the baltic sea, and up that gulf that separates sweden and finland.

well forgive me guys. all we got down here are sharks. lots of them! giant, friendly, harmless, whale sharks to be exact. and we got sharks sitting on the highest government offices here too. now these are the mean ones. hungry for blood, man-eating, great-whites! hahaha.. .

    Here is the answer

This site has a copy of the message where Linus suggests the penguin.
