Open Letter to Canonical, Red Hat, and Novell
http://opinunix.blogspot.com/2007/0...onsumer-to.html
This is a copy of an email I have sent to Canonical, Red Hat, and Novell. I just want to see what you think about it, and gather your opinions on the matter. The more information I can collect, the more informed I and other like-minded users can be.

fixed, sorry about that. It pasted correctly everywhere else, must have just been an issue here.

Interesting read. Personally I don't see the status quo changing for a long time. This is because there is very little financial incentive for distros to focus on desktop users. Most of the money in Linux is from servers and business users and as long as things remain this way, distro maintainers will keep focusing on the server and business users.

i agree with your post, but I doubt it will have any effect unless you have some money to put behind it...

that link keeps crashing konqueror =/
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

It's just a blogger site... nothing really unusual about it... odd.

Nice article to read.
Of course I too am interested in how the "big boys" will react, but I doubt they will. First of all because they are big, which means nobody is authorised to respond to this (except for the usual standard "thank-you-for-informing-us messages). And secondly, since these companies are big, they usually aren't waiting for "common" users to give them advice on how to do business.

The problem with Linux is the famous story on the chicken and the egg.
Companies won't invest in desktop-users because they want to make money and since 99% of the desktop-users go Windows ... And desktop-users won't switch to Linux because they don't know it is there and they feel companies don't care about them.
And personally, I have problems with the big boys making choices on how I should use Linux (simple, yet easy example: nautilus-open-terminal). They just follow Microsoft in that respect (simple, yet STUPPID example: hide known extensions).
