I actually had an experience with that too in college. One class (our absolute first programming class, CS 1310) had been assigned to a new professor who was so terrible he was run off mid-semester, but our replacement was a guy on loan from IBM. You could tell from listening to the guy talk and watching him screw around on his laptop that he was some kind of genius at programming advanced mathematical applications.

The downside was that he was a completely unintelligible lecturer. His mind was so disjointed he'd go off on tangents back and forth and never actually cover a whole topic before jumping a few chapters ahead and then back again.

Thank goodness the text for that class was actually quite good (this one) and I was able to teach myself the basics of C++ that semester.

I had one guy who was like a football coach or something and wrote unix paths like\this\with\wrong\slash. I also had another (mentioned in another thread) who was a mathematician teaching like CS2 or 3 and couldn't figure out how to do octal permissions in unix. Poor instructors rly bother me considering college is prbably the most expensive thing you will ever buy besides a house.

however, there is one possible good outcome: less people doing CS means less quality programmers which means our skills will be in more demand. more demand = more money ^_^
however, that's assuming that they decide not to just outsource the entire workforce to india.

I don't see very many programming jobs being outsourced. We programmers can't be replaced by a guy with a flow chart like level 1 tech support can.

they want the crappy programmers because they are cheap. they dont care if the program is bad, they only care about the money. look at all the crapware that is out there. look at at the good programs that get superceded by other programs because of marketing, or useless features, or because it was first.

good programmers want to make good programs, you have to find a place that cares about what they are putting out.

there seems to be these programming fads where some new technology comes out and its all the hype, but it may be used for things it wasnt really intended for. look at java, java is great, but people tried to use it for things it should be used for, i have some program that is needed to show the video feed for a camera you could attach to a mit handyboard(robot control board). its in java, now why would that make sense. a lot of cash register programs look java or VB or c# ish.

but the belief that it's happening can also deter people. in fact, until last year i didn't want to be a programmer at all.
