call for participation for a study of creativity in software work
Dear software developers,
This message has been sent to you to ask for your participation in an
online survey regarding creativity in commercial and open source
software development.
This study is being conducted as part of a research course in the
College of Information Sciences and Technology at the Pennsylvania State University. The goal of this survey is to better understand how the two types of environments may foster or hamper creativity and innovation as well as how developers working within both perceive such affects. Your participation is important in creating this understanding and to inform the results of the research to suggest ways the work environments could be improved with regard to fostering and supporting creativity. The data will be used to examine how and if the characteristics of an environment can be applied to others to improve them.
We are looking for participants who have experience in both commercial/proprietary workplaces and open-source projects.
The survey is available at http://my.3c.ist.psu.edu/beh201/Consent.html.
The survey consists of 27 open-ended questions and will take roughly two hours of your time to answer all of the questions, as they are
open-ended. Please complete the survey within the next two weeks.
In addition to this "survey," we are interested in performing interviews to better interact with developers and understand their thoughts and perspectives. If you would be open to this, please let us know so that we may contact you in the future.
You are also welcome to participate in our online discussion at http://cscl.ist.psu.edu/public/users...tivation/forum
If you have any questions about the research project, please contact
Dejin Zhao at dzhao@ist.psu.edu.
Thank you,
Dejin Zhao

Good grief... don't you think two hours is a little too much to expect from someone taking a survey?
