I was just wondering if anyone knows what if the fastest booting linux distro? I mean from when i click the on button to when gnome/kde/whatever is fully loaded.
P.S. i didn't know which forum to put this question under, so sorry if this is not the right one.

It depends on a lot of factors (filesystem you use, dhcp or static ip, custom kernel or stock one, etc.), but I would say the fastest I have seen is Archlinux.

it has to be a minimal gentoo install, though the newer (as in around september 2006) startup scripts are slower due to the way they handle ethernet connections (especially on my laptop). but that's another story.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

There really is no accurate answer to this question, because any distro can be made to boot faster than another, depending on what apps, drivers, and services are loaded at startup.

There are many guides out there to help you get whichever distro you have to boot faster. Mostly it has to do with what applications you run (as was said above). Some of the apps that start out by default aren't even used, therefore no need to start them.

Yeah I thought it might depend on what apps you use and how you configure it.
I just thought that there might be a distro out there whos main goal is to have the fastest booting linux, guess not.
Anyways thanks for the replys, im learning more everyday thanks to you guys

Ask and you shall receive (not very useful though):

I read about this distro a while ago and it's website doesn't seem to work anymore so it might be outdated. It's main goal is fast boots, 3 seconds to be exact."Today you are freer than ever to do what you want, provided you can pay for it!" --Bad Religion

With initng, I could make Gentoo boot in 6 seconds in my old desktop machine, the Gentoo box was pretty bloated with all kinds of applications but a light WM (Fluxbox or Windowmaker)
